The Beacon Baptist met for the first time on September 17, 1961, holding the first two services in the YMCA building on Fort Street in Southgate. On October 1, 1961, the services were moved to the Parkside School also in Southgate. We met there until our first building was erected on our present site on Northline Road in Taylor. Our first facility was built in 1963. This was a 9,500 square foot auditorium, offices, and educational wing. In 1973, an addition was erected which included a gymnasium and classrooms totaling 5,280 square feet.
The third building project was completed in 1981 housing a 1,300-seat auditorium with educational space on each side. In 1986 the church constructed a 3,500 square foot bus barn to service church vehicles and provide storage.
In November of 2000, the church moved into their present auditorium. This 32,000 square foot facility also houses nurseries, an office complex, and choir room.
The old auditorium was renovated into a 550-seat Fellowship Hall with full commercial kitchen and Youth rooms. The church occupied these in December of 2001.
Our church now owns 18 acres of land surrounding our present building and also owns three houses for our full-time pastoral staff. Our present pastor, Dr. Herbert Gilbert and his wife, Glenda, are celebrating their 45th year at the church, during 2011. Under his leadership the church has grown to over 1,300 in membership, offerings have increased steadily over the years, and we now support over two hundred home and foreign mission projects.
